Uncertainty Reigns as IPO Market Takes a Halt

At the start of 2025, things were finally looking up for U.S. initial public offerings (IPOs). After years of slow activity, a fresh wave of optimism had taken hold. Companies across sectors, especially in fintech, healthcare, and crypto, were gearing up to go public, hoping to ride a market rebound. But that momentum came to a screeching halt this week.
A sharp selloff in the markets, triggered by rising trade tensions and an aggressive new round of tariffs announced by President Trump, has shaken investor confidence away. Big names like StubHub, Klarna, Chime, and eToro have hit pause on their IPO plans, reevaluating their timelines considering the sudden volatility of the markets.
These companies weren’t just testing the waters, they were ready to go public. StubHub, Klarna, and Chime had lined up investor meetings and were prepping financials. Hinge Health and Circle Internet Financial were waiting in the wings. But on Wednesday came the tariffs, up to 34% on some imports, followed by a staggering $5 trillion drop in market value over just two days. Major stock indexes had their worst week in years, and the Nasdaq officially entered bear market territory.
That kind of chaos is the last thing IPO hopefuls want. Investors, now laser-focused on protecting their existing positions, aren’t in the mood to take on fresh risk. Fintech valuations have taken a hit, Affirm is down 46% this year, which makes it nearly impossible to price new offerings attractively. Some companies, like eToro and MNTN, have already shelved their IPOs, and even Medline Industries, one of the biggest names in the pipeline, is pulling back.
So, what’s next? Most likely, a wait-and-see approach. While many of these firms still hope to go public eventually, the outlook is gray. Until the markets stabilize and investor sentiment improves, the IPO window may stay shut. For now, the excitement of a long-awaited IPO revival has turned into a holding pattern, one that could last a while.
