U.S. air travelers should brace for higher ticket prices this year as airlines see strong demand for business and leisure travel. As of 2025, airlines are now regaining general popularity and control over pricing after a few rocky years during and after the pandemic. By limiting flight growth and focusing on profitability, their revenue will rise. The airlines are banking on consumers’ willingness to spend more on experiences like travel, even as fares rise.
Ticket prices are on the rise, with domestic fares up 12% compared to last year, according to the travel app Hopper. In January, the average cost of a “good deal” domestic flight hit $304, and this trend is expected to continue into summer. Major carriers like Delta, United, and American Airlines expect revenue growth in their early 2025 reports. Delta is predicting revenue increases of up to 9%, while United is hopeful about pricing improvements as weaker airlines cut back on unprofitable routes. On top of that, more travelers want premium seats, which cost more but offer more comfort and extra space.
While demand is high, airlines are dealing with some hurdles. Higher costs, especially from labor contracts, are eating into profits. American Airlines, for example, expects to make more revenue in the first quarter but is also anticipating a larger-than-expected loss due to rising expenses. Across the industry, airlines are being cautious about growth despite their banking on consumer demand. Domestic capacity is only expected to grow by 1.6% this quarter, compared to 3.5% growth a year ago. And with the delays in new plane deliveries from Boeing and Airbus, it’s making it harder for airlines to expand their fleets.
As we head into 2025, airlines are optimistic but careful. Strong demand is helping them stay profitable for now, even as ticket prices climb. For travelers, this means fewer fare sales and higher prices, especially for their preferred premium seats and popular routes. With limited capacity and steady demand, higher fares are likely to stick around for the foreseeable future. For anyone planning a trip, booking early and keeping an eye on deals will be more important than ever.
